POSSIBLE
AUSTRALIA SHOWS BY BOWIE MUSICIANS?
A
recent chat with Bowie collaborators Gail Ann Dorsey (bass), Gerry
Leonard (guitar), Mike Garson (piano) and Earl Slick (guitar)
indicates that the musicians are planning some side shows to coincide
with the Australia Tour.
Gail
indicated that she has never been to Australia and that she 'can't
wait' to come here. Moreover, when asked if she was planning any
solo gigs, she said: "I will do some solo spots with Gerry
(Spooky Ghost) in Australia". Gerry revealed that he was
hoping for Spooky Ghost shows in Perth and Sydney and that we
should check his site (www.spookghost.com)
closer to the dates.
There
is no word on whether Mike Garson intends to play solo gigs in
Australia but he does have a new album due out in January, so
it would seem possible. Likewise, Earl Slick has just released
a new album (which also happens to feature Bowie on one track).

"HEROES"
AT THE RUGBY WORLD CUP?
According
to the Adelaide
street press, "Heroes" will be performed by a 'big
name Aussie' at the televised World Cup Opening Ceremony on October
10.
The song was originally to be performed by Russel Crowe but due
to unavailability, the honours may now go to Tina Arena and John
Farnham instead.
The director of the ceremonies Andrew Walsh said the song was
chosen because 'it fits with the creative theme we are developing.
We may not even do that song now. It is within a number of option
we are considering'.

BEAT
MAGAZINE: REALITY REVIEW
A
pretty nice review of Bowie's Reality album appears in Melbourne
weekly BEAT:
As a Bowie fan of some years standing now, I find my favourite
songs and albums of his never grab me by the heartstrings straight
away. First listen, IÕm usually thinking: ÒYeah, itÕs okay I
guessÓ; itÕs not until the third or fourth listen that it has
me hook, line a sinker. ÔRealityÕ is no exception. In a music
world where first-listen-impact, market researched, bottom line
thinking dictates what actually makes it onto the CD shelves,
to know there are albums still being made this way is nice.
Once again, Bowie presents us with an entourage of eccentric
characters and personalties through whom the songs are being
told. With a kick-arse band behind him, and using the recording
technology to enhance the sonic atmosphere of the songs in some
absolutely brilliant ways, rather than to hide musical incompetence,
ÔRealityÕ takes us through the depths of madness, fascination
and despair, the quality of which weÕve come to expect from
Bowie. With lots of outside melodic ideas that somehow work,
most of the songs have an edgy, power-pop kind of feel; the
first single ÔNew Killer Star,Õ the title track ÔReality,Õ ÔPablo
PicassoÕ and ÔLooking for WaterÕ are good examples of this.
Some really beautiful ballads include ÔThe Loneliest GuyÕ and
ÔDays.Õ For those of us who greet every forthcoming Bowie album
like a letter from the front, or those who just Òkind of dig
him,Ó thereÕs litres of listening pleasure on this album (or
wait, maybe itÕs ounces, I always forget).
