BOWIE FOCUS GROUP

Last year, Sean Redmond and Toija Cinque (whom co-convened the David Bowie Symposium at ACMI), were commissioned to write another book about David Bowie – this one focuses on his fans.

Sean and Toija are about to start running a series of focus groups in the key cities where Bowie was associated with (London, New York, Tokyo, Berlin ) and are trying to discover what fans got/get from Bowie in terms of their identity, pleasure, belonging, ‘strangeness' etc. The first focus group one will run out of Melbourne and will be aimed at a very specific group: migrants (new, first or second generation). They have a 'hunch' that Bowie's outsider identity and the way he managed that, through music, character and performance, would have resonated with (some) migrants feeling 'outside' the cultural centre and looking to make sense of things in a 'new' and challenging environment. Through Bowie, they turned to face the strange.

NOTE: If folk can't make the advertised slot but are interested, Toija and Sean will likely run another one. There is also a survey that can be completed.
