Stage Theatre(AUS/NZ)
Although David Bowie has yet to be featured in a full scale rock theatre (ala 'We Will Rock You' or 'Mamma Mia'), he has been the feature of several smaller productions in Australia and New Zealand...

Life on Mars? (Stage Performance)

Life on Mars? Rock Opera (2001)

A rock opera based around the songs of David Bowie. Written and performed in Sydney, 2001.

Rock n Roll Suicide (Stage Performance)

Rock n Roll Suicide is a David Bowie inspired musical that was performed in Arrowtown, NZ in 2010.

Described as an unconventional theatrical experience, the show was set - from what we can gather - entirely through the lyrics of 24 Bowie songs that were performed live. The story follows that of Joe Rockstar who goes to London in 1969 to become a rock star but discovers the dream is not all he hoped it would be.

Involving the talents of sixteen Wakitipu singers and dancers, seven musicians and backstage organisers, the show famously gained the attention of David Bowie himself. In 2010, Bowie experssed to the director Margaret O'Hanlon that he would love to see the show and was wondering whether it would be taped or filmed. More info on that here.

Ngapartji Ngapartji (Stage Performance)

Initially as part of the Perth International Arts Festival, a performance of Ngapartji Ngapartji includes among other things, interpretations of David Bowie songs in the rare Aboriginal language known as Pitjantjarajara.

Ngapartji Ngapartji meaning "I Give You Something, You Give Me Something" was directed by playwright Scott Rankin. Trevor Jamieson, who co-created the production, performed the lead role.

Sleeping Beauty (Stage Performance)

A performance of Michael Kantor's Sleeping Beauty with Alison Bell, Renee Geyer, Grant Smith & Ian Stenlake includes spectacular live theatrical performances of 'Life On Mars?', 'Starman' and 'Rock n Roll Suicide' respectively.

Described as "Goth-punk meets classical elegance while gospel collides with glam", the performance promises to "deliver us into the power and the passion of the great song-writers of our time, including Nick Cave, Elvis Costello and David Bowie".

Recently revived is a digitally remastered special edition of Dogs In Space - the 1987 Australian film that famously depicts the Melbourne 1978 Bowie queue in it's opening scenes.

The film's main character Sam Sejavka was played by INXS lead singer Michael Hutchence.

Sam was among the first people in the three week long Bowie queue back in 1978 and his adventures at nearby Berry Street, Richmond are now local legend courtesy of the film. Sam also formed the early punk band The Ears and later, the new wave influenced Beargarden.

Watch the opening 10 minutes of the film here.
